Usable, portable devices...
... have always been just out of reach.
One fundamental reason has been the trade-off between a useable screen (resolution, physical size) and portability.

Ha! They used something like that in the movie Red Planet starring Val Kilmer.
I think they also used it in a tv sci fi show, but I can't remember which one.
